Fault Finding

Cable Faults
When a cable is buried underground, it is assumed it will provide decades of faultless operation. However, water ingress, installation or excavation damage, rodent attacks & general degradation or overloading of the cable can cause it to break down with the inevitable disruption.

What is a Fault?
There are many different types of cable fault - open circuit, short circuit, resistive, intermittent; some cores may have one type of fault whilst other cores may have another. No single piece of equipment is suitable for all types of fault.

Fault Finding

Fault Location Service
LTU has experienced personnel that were involved in the development of many types of fault location equipment currently in use today. This knowledge & experience means that LTU can provide a prompt and efficient cable fault location service on most electrical & communication types of cable. LTU also has a wide range of equipment suitable for locating all types of cable fault.

LTU personnel have undertaken countless fault location projects not only in the UK but also in the US & Europe. Examples include fault location on electrical & pilot cables at Shell Stanlow, phase to phase fault location with most of the UK Regional Electricity Companies to helping Boston Edison find open concentric neutral faults & Verizon (formerly MCI) detect where ground squirrels were chewing through fibre optic cables.

A recent LTU success story allowed Centreparcs at Longleat to open up a number of newly refurbished cabins, just in time for the October half term when a mains cable fault was keeping at least nine cabins without any power.

Consultation, Supply & Training
LTU can provide consultation on the correct equipment & procedures for companies to undertake their own cable fault location. LTU can also source & supply the correct equipment at a competitive price & ensure that the operatives are fully trained and conversant with all fault location techniques.
